- File inspection and counselling Find out what the authority requires. You can start preparing straight away.
- Proof of abstinence starts Unannounced tests in a CTU-compliant programme. Without gaps, otherwise the clock starts again.
- Apply for reissue of the licence Ideally now, so the authority can order the MPU.
- Preparation completed Typically 10 to 12 sessions over two to three months.
- Proof of abstinence completed We've assumed 12 months. With 6 months, it's sooner.

Questions about the timeline
When is the earliest I can take the MPU?
As soon as the authority has ordered the MPU and you're prepared. If proof of abstinence is required, you must first provide it without gaps over 6 or 12 months. That's why it usually sets the timeline.
When should I apply for reissue of my licence?
About 3 months before the ban period ends. Processing, the MPU order and the appointment take time, which would otherwise only start running after the ban ends.
Do I automatically get my licence back after the ban period?
No. You have to apply for reissue, and depending on the reason, the driving licence authority orders an MPU. Your licence is only reissued with a positive expert report.
