The MPU in another language: is it possible with an interpreter?

German is not your first language? Where language matters in the MPU, what to ask the assessment centre in advance and how to prepare well.

In short

Whether you can take the MPU (medical-psychological assessment, Medizinisch-Psychologische Untersuchung) in another language or with an interpreter is not a question we can give you a universally valid answer to. It is best to clarify this before you register, directly with the assessment centre (Begutachtungsstelle für Fahreignung), which you are free to choose anyway. One thing is certain: in the psychological interview, what counts is that you understand your own story and can tell it without contradictions, not perfect grammar.

Can I take the MPU in another language?

Whether the MPU is possible in another language or with an interpreter is something you have to ask the assessment centre. We do not have uniform, reliable rules on this. That is why we deliberately do not name any languages, costs or procedures here that we cannot back up.

One important advantage helps you here: you are free to choose the officially recognised assessment centre, for example TÜV, DEKRA, pima-mpu, AVUS or ias. So you can ask several centres and choose the one that best takes your situation into account. They all assess according to the same assessment criteria. The guide Choosing an MPU assessment centre shows how to compare them.

Note: Get any commitments about language or an interpreter confirmed in writing before you fix an appointment.

Where does language play a role in the MPU?

Language plays a role in all four parts of the MPU, most of all in the questionnaire and the psychological interview. The assessment takes about 3 to 4 hours in total.

Part of the MPUDurationWhere language mattersWhat you should ask in advance
Questionnaire30–40 min.Written questions about your history, the offence, consumption and living circumstancesIs the questionnaire available in my language, or may someone translate?
Medical examination30–40 min.Conversation with the doctor about the reason and your consumptionMay an interpreter be present?
Performance test30–40 min.Instructions on the computer (e.g. Vienna Test System or Corporal)Are the instructions also available in my language?
Psychological interview45–60 min.The most important part: your story, your change, your plansIs an interpreter allowed, who provides them, who pays?

The questionnaire is trickier than it looks. Your answers must match the later interview and what is in the file. If you misunderstand a question, you can easily create a contradiction. More on this in the guide Filling in the MPU questionnaire. The page MPU procedure explains the whole process.

Why is understanding more important than perfect German?

Understanding is more important than perfect German because the assessor evaluates the content: whether you have understood the cause, whether your change is genuine and documented, and whether your motive is sustainable. In doing so, the assessor checks the consistency between the file, the questionnaire, the lab results and your account.

For people with a different first language, this creates two typical risks:

  • Misunderstandings: a question that is misunderstood leads to an answer that does not match the file. This looks like a contradiction even though it is not one.
  • Sentences learned by heart: if you learn model answers in German without really understanding them, you sound rehearsed. Assessors recognise this, and it is a common reason for failing.

It is better to use simple sentences of your own. If you do not understand a question, ask. Taking a moment to think is allowed in the interview.

Which questions should you ask the assessment centre in advance?

In advance, you should clarify all points concerning language, procedure and costs. Write down the answers and get important commitments in writing.

  1. Can I take the assessment fully or partly in my language?
  2. Is an interpreter allowed? Do they have to meet certain requirements, for example be sworn?
  3. Does the assessment centre provide the interpreter, or do I bring one myself?
  4. What additional costs arise, and who pays them?
  5. May a relative translate, or is that ruled out?
  6. Are the questionnaire and the performance test instructions available in my language?
  7. Does translation make the assessment longer, and do I need to take this into account when choosing the appointment?

Ask several centres these questions. That way you can see which centre suits you best before you commit.

How do you understand letters from the authority and your file?

You understand letters from the authority and your file best if you know the most important official terms. They appear in every MPU order and determine your deadlines.

Term in GermanWhat it means
Fahrerlaubnisbehörde / FührerscheinstelleThe driving licence authority, which orders the MPU and decides on your licence
AnordnungThe letter in which the authority requires an expert report from you
FragestellungThe specific question that the expert report has to answer
FristThe date by which you are to submit the expert report
SperrfristThe ban period after a court judgment during which you cannot get a new licence
NeuerteilungThe application for a new licence after it has been withdrawn (reissue of the licence)
AkteneinsichtYour right to read the authority's documents (file inspection)
AbstinenznachweisLab tests that prove you are not consuming alcohol or drugs (proof of abstinence)

Always request file inspection and have unclear passages explained to you. Missed deadlines can lead to your licence being withdrawn. You will find more terms in the MPU glossary; the page MPU order explains what the order means.

What applies if you have a foreign driving licence?

Separate rules apply to a foreign driving licence, but they do not remove an obligation to take the MPU. You must have a licence from a country outside the EU converted within 6 months of taking up residence in Germany; on application, an extension of up to 6 months is possible.

For countries listed in Anlage 11 FeV (Annex 11 of the Driving Licence Regulation), this is often possible without a test; for other countries, tests are required. An existing German ban or MPU order is not affected by this. An EU driving licence is only recognised if you have lived in the issuing country for at least 185 days a year. During a German ban period, you may not obtain a valid driving licence abroad either.

What you can do now

  1. Apply for file inspection and have the order explained to you calmly.
  2. Ask two or three assessment centres about language, interpreters and costs.
  3. Get commitments confirmed in writing before you book the appointment.
  4. Practise telling your story in simple sentences of your own instead of learning model answers.
  5. Get support in working through your case: find suitable preparation.

Frequently asked questions

Does every assessment centre offer the MPU in English or Turkish?

We cannot answer this in general, because we do not have uniform rules on it. Ask the assessment centre directly which languages are possible. Since you are free to choose the centre, you can compare several providers.

May a family member translate at the MPU?

The assessment centre decides whether relatives may translate or whether a neutral interpreter is required. Clarify this before you register and get the answer in writing. Raise the question early so that you are not surprised on the day of the assessment.

Will I fail if my German has mistakes?

The assessor mainly evaluates the content: insight, documented change and a sustainable motive. Language difficulties mainly become a problem when they lead to misunderstandings and contradictions. So ask if you do not understand a question.

Should I learn answers in German by heart?

No, answers learned by heart sound rehearsed and are a common reason for failing. Simple sentences of your own that you really understand are better. Practise telling your story freely.
